208 – What did you do BEFORE kids?!?!

Hey, Mama. This is Mama’s Daily Dose, the short, actionable podcast for mamas who want more. I’m Meghan, Q Barrett of Hey, do you remember those times before you had kids, when you didn’t really think you had free time? But now looking back, you’re like, oh, my gosh, what did I do with all that time? And Mama’s Daily Dose is… What did you do before kids? Let’s get moving before we get interrupted.

Take a moment, Mama. And think back however long ago it was before you had kids… And what did you do with all that time? What did you do with your spare time? What did you like to do on the evenings and the weekends and you know, when you got to sleep in. And although it may seem like a lifetime ago, and a totally different woman who that was, this can be some great insight into what is going to make you happy? What are the things that bring you joy? What is this “identity” outside of mom?

You were you, before you had kids, you are still you! Now that you have kids, you just have another title added to your list of roles and titles. And that list of roles and titles…it may be long, it may be short, but that’s not WHO you are. Those are aspects of who you are, parts of it that make up a whole. But you are still you. There is more to you beyond all of your roles and titles.

So what are some of those things before kids that brought you joy? Look even further back? Like when you were a kid? What brought you joy? What were some activities that you could just do for hours on end, and you would just get lost and all of a sudden, your mom’s like, hey, come eat lunch, you’ve been doing blah, blah, blah for a few hours now. So what activities brought you joy before things changed when you had kids? What brought you joy for YOU? Just you mama.

Mama, your action today is to think about the things that you did before kids that really brought you joy, just for you. And if you haven’t already, head on over to and take the free quiz, “I’m a mom now, what the f do I want?” Two minutes to start thinking about what it is that’s really going to make you happy. What are all these things that are going to bring joy into your life? Because the happier that you are, the more you can exemplify that for your kids. Because as we talked about last week, you can’t make your kids happy. But you can sure show them HOW to be happy. And have a great day free of mommy guilt because you deserve it.
